Exam Format
4x Multiple Choice & 1x Written: Mathematics (60Q/30min), Numerical Reasoning (50Q/30min), Reading Comprehension (60Q/30min), Verbal Reasoning (60Q/30min), Written Expression (15min, no planning time). One sitting shared by Mac.Robertson, Nossal and Suzanne Cory (Year 10 & 11) and Melbourne High (Year 10 only); apply to each school separately.
Mathematics
Covers algebra, surds, indices, equations, linear and non-linear relationships, trigonometry, geometry, probability, statistics, financial mathematics, and more. Topics range from Year 7 to Year 10+ difficulty. Students must demonstrate fluency in multi-step problem solving under strict time pressure.
Numerical Reasoning
Tests the ability to interpret and analyse numerical data presented in tables, graphs, and charts. Questions involve percentages, ratios, averages, and logical deduction from data sets. Speed and accuracy are critical given the 50 questions in 30 minutes.
Reading Comprehension
Assesses understanding of written passages across fiction, non-fiction, and persuasive texts, plus correcting, completing and punctuating sentences. Students must identify main ideas, infer meaning, evaluate arguments, and interpret vocabulary in context. Time management is essential with 60 questions in 30 minutes.
Verbal Reasoning
Evaluates language-based reasoning including analogies, odd-one-out, word relationships, sentence completion, and logical deduction. Requires a strong vocabulary and the ability to recognise patterns in language. 60 questions in 30 minutes demands rapid processing.
Written Expression
One writing task in 15 minutes, with no separate planning or reading time. The mode is not announced in advance: it may be creative, narrative, descriptive, persuasive, expository or informative. Assessed on clarity, construction, grammar, punctuation, spelling, creativity and relevance to the task. Practise planning in your head in the first minute and writing in every mode.
